Yabby Lake Block 1 Pinot Noir has a special place in the history of Australian wine – as the first pinot noir to win the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy (at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards in 2013 with our 2012 vintage wine).
As with all Single Block Releases, it is not made every year – in fact, so far in its history it has been made just three times. This Christmas, we have released all three Block 1 Pinot Noirs in a limited edition three-pack. This is a special opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the evolution of this special block. Block 1 is 100% MV6 clone pinot noir, and each year a varying % of whole bunches have been used (see individual notes).
This pack also represents the rare opportunity to access the Jimmy Watson winning wine which of course is long-sold out. Winemaker Tom Carson has released a tiny allocation of all three wines from our own museum cellar, for members to enjoy this Christmas.
This is the ultimate gift for the pinot noir fanatic in the family!
A few additional notes on the wines are included below.
2012 was as close to perfect as a vigneron could hope for. Mild, warm and steady weather throughout the entire season, slow and steady ripening and fruit of incredible intensity and balance. This wine is drinking exceptionally well, and very much living up to its promise.
MV6 Clone. 80% whole bunches.
Winner of the Jimmy Watson, the wine also went on to collect a further two trophies at the National Wine Show – Best Pinot Noir and Best Single Vineyard Dry Red.
“The block planted entirely to the universally admired MV6 clone; hand-picked and hand-sorted before destemming into small open fermenters for a 3-4 day cold soak prior to fermentation, and subsequent maturation in French puncheons. Full colour, the very complex bouquet with high-toned perfumed red and black cherry fruits, the luscious palate following suit with some plum joining the cherry flavours; the line and length are outstanding, as is the balance of silky fruit, oak and tannins. 97 points”
A warmer than average season and subsequent early harvest produced highly fragrant wines with lovely balance and texture. 20% whole bunches.
“Cold soaked in small open pots 14 days on skins; matured in French puncheons for 10 months. Bright crimson; the bouquet is highly floral and scented with intriguing Asian spices shot through its bevy of red and black cherry fruits, the palate combining all of the characters of the bouquet with a nuanced savoury twist. 97 points”
The first vintage in the brand new winery at Yabby Lake and what a great year to start. A warm and extended season, producing some of the best wines we have made. Classics in the making. 100% whole bunches in this 2015 vintage wine.
James Suckling (Nick Stock):
“A lighter rendering, but one that still has inherent power and assertiveness. The lighter red cherries and strawberries are wrapped in fragrant red florals on the nose. The palate has a lithe and juicy feel to it with plenty of life and gently crunchy tannins that remain measured and elegant. 96 points”
